UPDATES FOR CAPE TOWN VISITORS:

  1. TABLE MOUNTAIN: Note that it is now possible to PRE-BOOK your TICKETS for Table Mountain.  During summer the queues can take you 2 - 3 hours to get onto the cable car - as such it is recommended to book in advance.  To book and to find out more about operating times visit: http://tablemountain.net/.  Tickets are valid for 7 days from the date that they are booked for.  The new season ticket price is R170 per person and this can be refunded less the booking cost of R10.
  2. ROBBEN ISLAND: If you wish to visit the island on your holiday you need to pre-book as tickets are usually sold out once you get here.  Simply visit their website to book: www.robben-island.org.za
  3. CAPE TOWN SOCCER STADIUM TOURS: The stadium for the World Cup is now complete and well worth a visit on your trip to Cape Town. Costs are R30.00 per adult, R15.00 per child and R15.00 for pensioners. Operational days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Tour times: 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00 For tour Bookings: call: +27-21 430 7300 or  Email: visitors@sailstadefrance.co.za
  4. CAPE TOWN CITY SIGHTSEEING TOURS: The hop-on-hop off bus - every city needs one of these.  This is a fantastic way to do the city at your own pace.  My recommendation is to book tours for the longer distance activities such as Cape Point and Winelands and to do the city open bus tour.  One of the perks of the city tour is that when you get tired or bored - you simply stay on the bus and it ends up in Camps Bay which is our beach area lined with bars and restaurants........a perfect end to the day to relax and enjoy cocktails.  They now have a system where you can pre-book your tickets and get a discount - www.citysightseeing.co.za Note that you are not restricted to buying it for one day as the ticket is valid over a couple of days for a one day use.

GREAT FOR KIDS:

ORGANIC FARM AT THE HEART OF CAPE TOWN -The Millstone Farmstall & Cafe, Oude Molen Eco-Village, Alexandra Rd, Pinelands

The Millstone Farmstall has a fantastic kiddies garden for those dry winter days, where a tree house ship allows kids to go on ‘voyages’ and be pirates. There is a charming little wendy house on stilts with a slide (perfect for toddlers) and there are swings under a tree. We also have Milly May – our own piglet who is very friendly and comes out to play with the chickens and dogs every afternoon.

Just over the fence there are 40 horses, which love the apples and carrots offered by all the visitors. Kids and grownups alike can go on horse rides too. Below the farmstall are the wetlands, which form part of the Two Rivers Urban Park. Oude Molen has five organic produce growers and visitors can buy freshly picked produce daily. They are one of the only – if not the only – wood-fired bread bakers in Cape Town, with a fabulous range of breads, including chocolate ciabatta. Their handmade butter biscuits are legendary and they even have beehives and spin their own honey.

The Millstone Farmstall & Cafe runs pizza and biscuit making workshops during school holidays.

For more information, phone                +27 (0)21 447 8226         or email millstone@polka.co.za.

Romantic places in Cape Town:

  • Salt Restaurant has to be the "hottest spot" in Cape Town at the moment.  It boasts sweeping views of the Atlantic ocean with windows from floor to ceiling.  The views are outstanding, the decor gorgeous and they have teamed this up with an excellent chef.  Visit the Salt Bar for drinks and tapas or visit the restaurant for a fine dining experience.  Details on the restaurant page of the website.
  • Harbour House Restaurant in Kalk Bay for panoramic sea views.  NB book on the old small side and try and get a table by the window.  (Tel no in the Cape Restaurants section)
  • Book an evening in the cellar at the restaurant at the Cellars-Hohenhort Hotel in Constantia.  Tell them when you book that you wish to be alone in the cellar and that you want a romantic evening - they will ensure that you are the only ones in the cellar and that you have a really good evening.  This can also be booked in conjunction with their tasting menu (6 courses I think!). Tel 021-794-2137 PS start the evening in the Martini Bar which of course boasts the largest number of different Martinis in South Africa.  This bar has recently been redecorated in a contemporary modern style and is really gorgeous.
  • Haiku Restaurant: Contemporary Eastern Restaurant - still one of the most fashionable places to eat out this season.  It is dark, intimate and modern.  The food is a mixture of different Asian cusines and they offer a variety of dishes from Sushi (excellent) through to Peking Duck.  See Cape Restaurants section for the number.
  • 95 Keerom: Still one of our favourites this season. Dress up a little for this restaurant - it has an elegance that reflects the people of Northern Italy.
  • Terroir Restaurant: Excellent winelands restaurant.  We were devastated when it won the award for one of the Top 10 restaurants in SA at the end of last month..........the secret of how good the food is at one of our favourite restaurants is now out! So book in advance to ensure that you do not miss out
  • Camps Bay Promenade if the weather is good: Nothing beats simply heading down to the suburb of Camps Bay in the late afternoon for a cocktail at one of the sidewalk cafes............gently watching the sun go down and then ambling along and chosing a spot for dinner.  Our favourites: Sandbar for cocktails, Paranga for mediterannean style dishes, Codfather for fish, Summerville for the view - not a bad spot for dinner either and Baraza for drinks..........Blues is also an institution along the strip.  Don't miss Zepi Tepi the new dinner club above Blues.  Almost forgot - it is a sin to leave Camps Bay without having an icecream at SINNFUL.  The store is hidden - so ask for it! They boast the most amazing assortment of flavours of icecreams.
  • Wembley Square - this is a new building that combines inner city living with retail space.  The square is very contemporary - head through for drinks/smoothies/dinner at Sinns/ (I hear that the Ostrich Steak is the most delicious in town)/coffee/gym
