JOHN PLATTERS WINE GUIDE 2010: The John Platters guide is the first book you should buy on arrival in South Africa if you are planning to go and explore our various wine regions. This guide rates all of the wines available on the South African market. Note that wines are often tasted soon after harvest and as such not every wine puts its best foot forward initially. As such use the guide as a reference, not a definitive judgement. The book also gives you maps of the various regions, some info on the farms and winemakers and some info on winelands restaurants. Below is the list of the wines that were rated 5* for 2010. If you click on the title it will take you through to the Platters website. Note that Pick n'Pay (local SA supermarket) usually have the cheapest copies of the Platters guide. If you buy it on a wine farm - expect to pay double!
John Platter SA Wine Guide Announces a record 41 Five-Star Wines For 2009
The John Platter Wine Guide, SA’s leading wine annual since 1980, has announced 41 five-star wines to be featured in the upcoming 2009 edition. Given the enormous number of ranges and individual products tasted, the wines which merit a five-star rating make up a very select group indeed.
The Guide, which strives to rate, as far as is practically possible, all of the wines that are available for the duration of the particular edition, locally as well as abroad, tasted and assessed nearly 6 400 individual wines over several months.
Responsible for this mammoth task is an experienced team of tasters, who ranked the wines according to the guide's five-point scale, ranging from 0 stars ('Somewhat less than ordinary') up to 5 stars ('Superlative. A Cape classic').
The five star recipients are:

MICHELANGELO INTERNATIONAL WINE AWARDS - SEPT 08:
The Michelangelo International Wine Awards was created in 1997 by Lorraine Immelman, a wine lover and marketing/public relations consultant, when she identified a need in the wine industry for the creation of an international wine competition for South Africa: an international jury from Europe, the USA, UK and Asia judging local wines. Up to then local wine competitions were run and judged by the wine makers themselves, and were under scrutiny for not being objective or fair.
Since its inception there has been increasing support for the competition among local producers and today it is considered one of the top three wine contests in South Africa.
With this international competition the organisers aim to annually identify South African wines which will fare well in international markets, hence the appointment of an international panel. The organisers endeavour to invite only one judge for a particular country, including South Africa. Early days
In October 1997 the first international jury, consisting of 10 international and two local judges, arrived in South Africa for the first MIWA, then held in Johannesburg. For this first competition, only 146 entries were received! Although this was a small number, the organisers were confident that it reflected the local wine industry's endorsement of the new competition and what it stands for. Entries have since increased steadily by an average of 30% per year to 187 the following year, 301 in 1999, 423 in 2000 and a staggering 1 056 entries in 2003!
The Michelangelo International Wine Awards, (MIWA) is widely regarded as one of the wine competitions with the most credibility in South Africa.
