TOWNSHIP TOUR OPTIONS (all guides are members of their local communities) :

 

SUMMER JAZZ TOWNSHIP  TOUR (Thursday,Friday & Saturday afternoon tour and evening): 

Experience the true African culture and rich heritage sites of the Langa and Gugulethu townships combined with dinner and jazz at an authentic township restaurant for ZAR 750. Tour leader and host on this tour is Laura Ndukwana, a well respected local and owner of the Thuthuka Jazz Cafe.

Tour Highlights

Thuthuka Jazz Cafe - Presents a fun and relaxed atmosphere for dinner with traditional dishes and gives you the opportunity to interact and socialise with the locals. The smooth African Jazz entertainment spices up the evening and culminates in opera singing by a resident group.

Gugulethu Seven Memorial - Built to commemorate the death of seven young black activists who were ambushed and murdered by police in March 1986.

Local Men's Hostel - Designed by the former apartheid government for migrant labourers who moved to the city looking for employment.

Sangoma - The traditional healer still plays an important role in the community providing an alternative source of health care.

Nonkuleko Vegetable Garden - Run by local women who feed over 200 school children daily and serve meals to HIV/AIDS and TB sufferers at the local clinic.

Township Jazz Summer Tours run on Friday, Saturday and Sundays (or on appointment for groups of more than 4 people).

Price: R750.  This includes transport from central Cape Town, the township tour and the dinner and jazz. 

 

 

Standard 1/2 day Township Tour:  This is an essential tour for any visitor to South Africa.  We are a mix of 1st and 3rd world and as such, it is fascinating for you to get a glimpse into the lives of the people of our country.  The tours are designed to introduce you to the culture and diversity of our country in a way that is positive and uplifting. You will be left with the memory of seeing different lifestyles, cultures and day-to-day life.  The tour creates the opportunity to interact with people living in informal settlements.

Half day Xhosa Folklore Tour (Saturday afternoons only): Even under the influence of urbanisation, people in the townships hold their customs dearly.  This tour gives you the opportunity of being introduced to Xhosa folklore by an English speaking guide.  You witness the performance of "Igongqo" (ancestor rituals) and "Umcimbi" (rites for different reasons).

Half day Gospel Tour (Sunday): The religious tour gives you the opportunity to visit several different church services in the Townships.  You'll witness the important role these churches play in the community's lives and hear the beautiful and moving sounds of the gospel choirs.  Please note that the dress-code is semi-formal.
